How GEO is Changing the Way People Find Your Business

GEO, short for Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring your website so AI tools like ChatGPT can find your content, understand it, and recommend it as the answer to someone’s question. It matters because a growing share of people, especially the next generation, no longer type a search into Google at all. They just ask 🤷‍♀️

This really hit home for me one day…

My daughter has never opened Google in her life. But I realized she’s the child of this new age, when one day I watched her grab my phone, click on Claude, and simply ask out loud: “Where’s the best ice cream in our town?” She then spent the next ten minutes convincing us we absolutely have to try it (today!! 😃)

Then later, we were talking about her horse riding lessons and how she needed a new helmet. Same scenario, different app this time (I have shortcuts to all my AI voice assistants sitting right on my home screen), so she grabbed ChatGPT and asked: “Where can we buy a horse riding helmet? It needs to be blue or turquoise!”

No typing and scrolling through ten blue links. Just a question, out loud, and an answer she trusted enough to act on.

I sat there thinking: this is not the future of search. This IS search, right now, for an entire generation…

And if you have a website, whether you blog, sell a service, or run a shop from it, that shift is already changing whether people ever find you.

So let’s talk about GEO, so you can keep up with the younger generations 😊

Table of Contents

What exactly is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It’s all about optimizing your website so tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews can actually pick up your content, make sense of it, and offer it up as the answer when someone asks a question.

Sometimes it’s also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or AI SEO. Different name, same idea, and it all comes down to one sentence:

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in search engines. GEO gets you recommended by AI.

Why is search changing so fast?

The short answer: the middle step disappeared.

People used to search, get a list of links, click one, and read.

Now they ask a question out loud or in a chat box and get handed a finished answer, often without visiting a single website.

You have probably already noticed this on Google itself.

Zero-click searches, where someone gets their answer directly on the results page and never clicks through to any site, now make up a huge share of all searches.

AI Overviews sit right at the top of the page, summarizing content pulled from multiple sources before you ever get the chance to be one of the ten blue links underneath.

Add ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity into the mix, tools that skip the results page entirely, and you can see why the ground is moving.

The click you used to count on might now happen inside someone else’s app instead of on your site.

How is GEO different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO had a fairly predictable playbook. GEO doesn’t work like a checklist you complete once, it works more like reputation.

Ranking used to be enough. You picked a keyword, checked the competition, wrote enough optimized content around it, built up your experience and expertise, and a few months later you had a real shot at page one of Google. Slow, but logical.

AI tools work differently. They’re not just reading your website, they are reading what gets said about you across the whole internet.

Your reviews, your social media presence, mentions in Reddit threads, YouTube comments, guest posts, Pinterest pins, and how often real people bring your name up as the answer to someone else’s question, all of it counts now.

That means the goal shifts from optimizing a page to building brand awareness.

An active presence on social media, people genuinely talking about your business, and real visibility across the platforms your audience already spends time on now matter even more than anything on your website itself.

What can actually help you get found now?

Whether you blog, sell a course, run an online shop, or offer a service from your site, the same principles apply.

You are not just trying to get cited anymore, you are trying to get recommended, the way a friend recommends a product she genuinely loves.

Answer the real question immediately

Whatever your page title promises, say it plainly in the first two sentences.

AI tools extract the clearest, most self-contained answer they can find, not the one buried under three paragraphs of introduction.

Write your headings as real questions

Instead of stuffing a keyword into every heading, structure your page around the exact questions people would actually ask.

“How much does WordPress hosting cost?” gets pulled into an AI answer far more easily than a heading like “WordPress Hosting Pricing Guide.”

Back up claims with real numbers and sources

AI tools simply prefer concrete, verifiable information over vague statements, in the same way a careful reader would.

“Many websites get hacked” isn’t something any AI tool is going to quote. “43% of all websites run on WordPress, making it the most targeted platform for hackers” is, especially with a source attached, because it is specific and something the AI can verify and stand behind.

Show your name and your real experience, in the content itself

Not just tucked away on an About page. Your own story, the mistakes you have made, the things you learned the hard way, that is exactly the kind of signal AI tools are trained to weigh as trustworthy.

Keep everything visibly updated

A “last updated” date is a small thing that tells both readers and AI systems your information is current, not something you wrote once in 2022 and forgot about.

Make sure AI crawlers can actually reach you

If GPTBot or PerplexityBot are blocked in your robots.txt, none of the above matters, because those tools simply cannot see your site at all.

Consider adding an llms.txt file

It’s a simple text file, similar to robots.txt, that some AI tools are starting to check for a clean, plain-language summary of what your site is about and which pages matter most.

It is still an emerging standard, not something every AI tool reads yet, but it’s easy to add (if you have a good SEO plugin) and points AI tools straight to your best content instead of leaving them to guess.

Show up where your people already are

Product reviews, testimonials, being mentioned in a Facebook group, a genuine comment thread on Instagram, all of it feeds the same brand awareness that gets you recommended, not just found.

What does the future of search actually look like?

A few things already feel safe to predict, and they all point the same direction: further away from rankings, closer to trust.

Zero-click will keep growing

More people will get their answer without ever landing on a website, yours or anyone else’s.

That makes the traffic you actually do get more valuable, because it’s coming from people who chose to go deeper on purpose.

Being recommended will matter more than being cited

A citation is a source line nobody reads. A recommendation is an AI tool telling someone “this is the one people trust,” the same way a friend would. That is the bar moving forward, and it’s built on real reputation, not just keyword placement.

Information overload will make real human experience the differentiator

We are entering a world where anyone can generate a glowing, convincing product review in thirty seconds, written in a voice that sounds exactly like an excited friend, “I tried this and you guys, it’s amazing.”

Scroll through ads on any platform right now and you will already spot fully AI-generated “people”.  Faces that do not exist, gushing over a product with the same warm, relatable delivery a real customer would use.

When people can no longer easily tell that apart from a real person’s honest experience, genuine human connection becomes the thing people actively seek out and trust.

Your real story, your real customers, your real voice, that becomes your biggest advantage ☺️

Presence beyond your own website will matter more than ever

AI systems read the whole internet, not just your homepage.

Showing up consistently and helpfully across social media, communities, and other people’s platforms will keep paying off.

Where should you start?

This might sound scary and overwhelming, but I’ve learned over the years that when something feels like too much, baby steps are the way to keep moving forward. At least for me… 😊

Pick your five most-visited pages. Rewrite the headings as real questions. Check your robots.txt.

Create a strategy that focuses on brand awareness, not SEO.

Look at where your business gets talked about outside your own website, and put a little energy there too.

Simple beats complicated every time, even here.

You’ve got this!
